Week 6
Lunch with professor María Amelia Salazar
Having lunch at the same time every day can make you loss opportunities to run into people you don’t usually run into. This time, I ran into professor María Amelia Salazar.
A Doctor in Mathematics from Ultrecht University, she used to teach at the Brazilian university Universidade Federal Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. As per her website (linked above), her main research interests are “Lie groupoids, Lie algebroids, Lie pseudogroups, geometry of PDE’s, Poisson geometry, contact and symplectic geometry.”
We ordered the pick-up-a-tray-and-go-along menu at the same restaurant at almost the same time, so it felt natural to have lunch together.
She explained to me how the professorship system works at university and recounted her professional life in Brazil. It was interesting and insightful. She asked me about my professional prospects and I mentioned a possible Masters Degree and, if I really want to, a Doctoral Degree.
English Wednesday

This week’s thematic drawing brought to you by EMB. You’re looking at Fred and Tortilla, our office pets.
¡Espabila!

I found this paper slip inside a cabinet at IKEA. It says «Hola! Te estan metiendo CACHO !!! Espabila», or ‘Hi! They’re cheating on you !!! Wake up!’.
Clouds

I liked the pattern. Think these are cirrocumulus (Cc)?
Reflections

A reflection on a pond on my way to the office, near the Ceiba.
